ARANETA COLISEUM, QUEZON CITY – (12 October 2015) A church choir composed of 8,688 gospel singers rendering a total of 18 numbers in at least five languages and joined by others in 1,360 monitoring centers across the globe recently vied for the title, “Largest Gospel choir.”

The choir belonging to the Members Church of God International (MCGI) bagged a Guinness World Record title during the special 35th anniversary presentation of the program, Ang Dating Daan. “The Old Path” in English, the program is the longest running radio-television of its kind that started in 1980.

According to the GuinnessWorldRecords.com website, this category refers to “the largest number of people singing a gospel choir, properly conducted under concert conditions.”

The Ang Dating Daan Chorale opens the revelry with a majestic rendition of “The Lord’s Prayer.”

The Ang Dating Daan Chorale opens the revelry with a majestic rendition of “The Lord’s Prayer.”

The culmination of the Ang Dating Daan 35th anniversary is to celebrate through songs not only its broadcast milestones and global reach but more importantly the commitment of the program towards charity causes.

During the celebration, ten charitable institutions which shelter and support the handicapped and differently abled people were the guest of honors in the said event. Each group was gifted with P100k and thirty individuals were given P10K each. All invited physically challenged persons including their aides were given grocery items.

Charity had been at the core of Ang Dating Daan’s social responsibilities ever since its inception, and serenading the handicapped with songs that encourage and strengthen their faith was seen as the most fitting theme to pursue at the program’s 35th year.

Apart from the thousands of Ang Dating Daan Chorale members, persons with disabilities from different institutions also join the ADD in celebrating its 35 fruitful years.

Meanwhile, Guinness World Records Judge Fortuna Burke Melhem confirmed the success of MCGI’s record-breaking attempt the same day, indicating it recorded 8,688 gospel choir members in attendance. The tally of the attendance was validated by the external auditing firm, P&A Grant Thornton.

MCGI’s church choir, that sang at Smart-Araneta on October 12, 2015, rendered a total of 18 numbers, including medleys in different languages such as Tagalog, English, Portuguese, Spanish and Swahili. Swahili is a language widely used as a lingua franca in East Africa.

Joining the chorus at The Big Dome were MCGI choirs in more than 1,360 satellite-monitoring centers across the globe.

“Like what we always say, if we are able to do something, and if there is any glory attained, it is always for God – to God be the glory!” said Bro. Eli Soriano, host of The Old Path and the Overall Servant of MCGI.

The church leadership also expressed their gratitude to the Lord for The Old Path program’s three decades of broadcast, as well as to all those who attended the event.

"Singing for the glory of our Lord is our pride," Ang Dating Daan host Bro. Eli Soriano shares before the immense Araneta crowd.

QUEZON CITY, Philippines — The Mayor of Quezon City, Herbert Bautista, is currently preparing his line-up for the 2016 elections.

Bautista said, there are positions in the district level, such as councilors, that need to be completed before filing the certificate of candidacy as a re-electionist.

In early 2015, the mayor tried to run for senator.

As the filing period drew closer and after consultations with friends and family he decided to run as re-electionist for his last term.

According to Bautista his decision to run again is prompted by the clamor for his re-election and continuity of his programs.

In his State of the City Address yesterday, he reported that within 9 months of 2015, the city’s gross revenue collection already reached Php 14.59 billion which is Php 2 billion higher in comparison to the same period of 2014.

The city also has Php 172.8 billion from a 30-year old collection case that may be used for development projects.

Bautista has no known opponent as of yet.

Regardless of their condition, they were still very happy to participate in the celebration of the longest running religious program in radio and television.

Members Church of God International led by Brother Eli Soriano and Brother Daniel Razon, is an organization that is very passionate and consistent in helping various marginalized sectors in society, through outreach programs such as medical missions among many others.

The audience were visibly moved, during the musical number performed by PWD’s who sang songs of praises.

In closing, Bro.Eli’s message served as an inspiration to a lot of PWD’s who were present in the event.

“That’s the very reason why we invited disabled persons tonight. But spiritually I do not believe that they are disabled. They are the most able person to inherit the kingdom of God because they are less fortunate on earth and their glory must be in the afterlife in the world to come.”

The special guests were very grateful to Bro. Eli and Bro.Daniel who conceptualized this meaningful way of celebrating Ang Dating Daan’s 35th anniversary. (UNTV News)

QUEZON CITY, Philippines — The Guiness Book of World Records official adjudicator Fortuna Burke Melhelm was visibly moved by the songs of praises performed during the Old Path’s 35th anniversary celebration.

In addition to these, a raffle was drawn where 30 persons with disability luckily brought home cash amounting to 30 thousand pesos each.

One of them was Jerico who is suffering from a bone disease and will be celebrating his birthday.

Newer Tesla Motors Model S sedans will be able to steer and park themselves under certain conditions starting Thursday, the carmaker said, although Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk cautioned that drivers should keep holding the steering wheel.

New “autopilot” features, designed for cars built after September 2014, will be available for customers in the United States, Tesla said. European and Asian owners must wait another week. Tesla will provide the features through an over-the-air upgrade.

Musk cautioned that autopilot functionality was in beta mode and full “hands-off” driving was not recommended.

“We’re being especially cautious at this stage so we’re advising drivers to keep their hands on the wheel just in case,” Musk told reporters at the company’s Silicon Valley headquarters. “Over time there will not be a need to have your hands on the wheel.”

Reporters who took Model S sedans with the new features for a test drive and took their hands off the wheel saw a notice saying “hold steering wheel” illuminate on the dashboard.

In more difficult navigating conditions, an audio alert will come on and if that also is ignored, the car will slow and eventually stop, Tesla said.

For drivers, “We’re very clearly saying this is not a case of abdicating responsibility,” Musk said. “That will come at some point in the future but … this is still early days.”

Instructions to owners say “autosteer is a hands-on feature. You must keep your hands on the steering wheel at all times.”

Tesla, which this month unveiled its Model X SUV, has been the U.S. pioneer in luxury electric cars charged by batteries. Its expertise in software has made it a leader in self-driving features, which more traditional carmakers have been slower to develop.

Musk estimated that within three years, cars will be able to drive “from your driveway to work without you touching anything,” but regulatory approval could take years.

He said regulators would need data showing that self-driving cars work.

Teslas already on the road will help the autopilot constantly improve and become more reliable, he said.

“The whole Tesla fleet acts like a network. When one car learns something they all learn it,” he said. “As … more people enable autopilot, the information about how to drive is uploaded to the network. Each driver is effectively an expert trainer in how the autopilot should work.”

Apple’s potential damages in a patent fight with the University of Wisconsin’s licensing body could reach $400 million as a trial on the amount Apple owes for infringing a processor patent got under way on Wednesday, two people familiar with the case said.

The figure is less than half the amount that U.S. District Judge William Conley cited last month as the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation’s maximum claim for damages.

In a pre-trial ruling on Sept. 29, Conley refused a request by Apple to limit damages in the case. He said WARF’s maximum claim was $862.4 million, citing Apple’s own figures.

On Tuesday, a federal jury in Madison, Wisconsin said Apple (AAPL.O) violated a patent owned by WARF, which helps improve chip efficiency. The jury also said that the patent was valid.

But heading into the damages phase of the trial on Wednesday, WARF’s claim is approximately $400 million, according to sources from both sides speaking on background as the trial is ongoing.

WARF appears to have dropped some claims during the trial, including one on sales of iPhones and iPads before the lawsuit was filed, but Reuters could not immediately verify how much they account for the reduction in Apple’s potential liability.

“WARF did prevail on liability but evidence regarding damages has yet to be presented,” a WARF spokeswoman said on Wednesday.

WARF sued Apple in January 2014 alleging infringement of its 1998 patent for improving processor efficiency. The jury was considering whether Apple’s A7, A8 and A8X processors, found in the iPhone 5s, 6 and 6 Plus, as well as several versions of the iPad, violate the patent.

Cupertino, California-based Apple denied any infringement and argued the patent is invalid, according to court papers.

WARF used the patent to sue Intel Corp in 2008, but the case was settled the following year on the eve of trial.

The case is Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation v. Apple Inc, U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin, No. 14-cv-62.

MANILA, Philippines — On the talk show Get It Straight With Daniel Razon a group of retired soldiers from the Conference Assembly For Unity And Solidarity Associations In The Armed Forces & Police Retirees, Veterance Pensioners, Inc. (CAUSA-AFPRVPI), called the attention of the government to clear the backlog of their unpaid pension which has already reached more than P18-billion.

“In behalf of 123,000 AFP pensioners worldwide, sana naman po ang iyong puso ay lumambot at wag na pong patagalin,” appealed Ret. Lt. Col. Buenaventura Aguilar, Jr., secretary general of CAUSA-AFPRVPI.

(In behalf of 123,000 AFP pensioners worldwide, we hope you can find it in your heart not to drag this out any longer.)

The group said, these arrearages from their pension have accumulated from year 2000 to 2012.

The retired soldiers cited, Section 17 of the Presidential Decree 1638 which states that when the basic pay of the active personnel increases, so do the benefits of the retirees.

Stated in the April 6, 2015 ruling of the Commission on Audit or COA, the Department of National Defense and the Armed Forces of the Philippines should produce the alpha list o master list of the AFP retirees, pensioners and beneficiaries.

The agency said the whole amount should be included in the budget proposal for next year in order to distribute it to the retirees. But after 6 months, there’s still no clear direction on COA’s decision.

More than 120 thousand pensioners will benefit from this pension claims. They are asking government to fast track the process because most of them need medical attention and have dependents.

“Sixty [retirees] ang namamatay every month sa libingan ng bayani lang yan,” said Ret. Ltcol. Aguilar in response to host Daniel Razon’s comment that some retirees have already died waiting for their pending pensions. (Sixty [retirees] die every month at the Heroes’ Cemetery alone.)

Some housing units in Cavite are already using prepaid electricity

CAVITE, Philippines — More than 500 houses at a subdivision in Cavite are now using prepaid electricity from meralco.

Each house is installed with a smart meter that can function only when it is loaded. Residents are finding the system better than postpaid.

With prepaid, consumers may control their electric consumption and ideally save more.

Alexa Montejo who lives alone, uses prepaid electricity and only spends P300 monthly. It is P100 lower than her previous bill of P400 when she was still using postpaid.

“Yung sa postpaid po kasi unlimited siya; hindi mo alam kung mataas na yung ginagamit mo. Unlike sa prepaid, alam ko kung namomonitor mo siya kasi may nag-tetext sayo everyday na yung na-consume mo is 10, 12, 20 pesos. Alam mo kung paano siya tipirin,” she said.
(Postpaid is unlimited so you don’t know if you’re usage is high. Unlike in prepaid, you could monitor your consumption because they send text message every day, whether you have consumed p10 or 20 pesos. You will have an idea how to budget your consumption)

Lovely Azcaraga has two children and owns a lot of appliances at home. Her bill rose to P6,000 when she was still using postpaid. After she shifted to prepaid, her monthly bill dropped to P3,000 monthly.

“Mas naging conscious na po. Hindi katulad dati, sabay-sabay nakabukas electric fan, aircon.”

(We are more conscious now unlike before we used to turn on all appliances at the same time.)

Meralco’s “Kuryente Load” can be availed in p100, p200, p300, p500 and p1,000 denominations.

All prepaid customers receive a daily text message reminding them of their remaining load.

Almost all of these houses in this particular subdivision use prepaid electricity. Meralco plans to expand its prepaid electricity service soon. But so far, the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has only allowed up to 40,000 houses. Meralco’s petition to expand up to 100 housing units is still pending.

For now, installation of smart meters remains free of charge from Meralco. (UNTV News)

Yahoo’s next step in password security is to eliminate them altogether.

Starting on Thursday, the company announced, users of the Yahoo Mail app on both iOS and Android will have access to a new service called Yahoo Account Key, which uses smartphones to verify identities in lieu of traditional passwords.

Here’s how it works: When users who sign up for Account Key try to access Yahoo Mail, they will no longer need to enter their password. Instead, the Account Key service will send a message to the smartphone connected to the account.

With a tap on yes or no, users can indicate it is a legitimate attempt to get into the account or deny unauthorized access.

If their smartphone is lost or stolen, users can verify identities through an email or a text message sent to alternative accounts and numbers.

In a blog post on Yahoo’s Tumblr page, Dylan Casey, vice president of product management, said Account Key is more secure than traditional passwords because it prohibits anyone from signing in to access an account without the verification that Account Key provides.

Satnam Narang, a security manager with Symantec, called the approach “a step above a password” but said it still falls short of the golden standard of what’s known as two-factor authentication, which requires users to confirm their identify with two different pieces of information.

He also expressed doubts that most users will let passwords die easily and encouraged widespread adoption of password management tools until a new verification method replaces them for good.

“I think passwords are going to be around for a little while, I don’t think they’re going away as soon as we’d like them to. They’re so ingrained in everything we do from banking to email to shopping, you name it,” Narang said.

In addition to Account Key verification, Yahoo executives announced a revamped version of Yahoo Mail that allows users to connect with, manage and search Outlook, Hotmail and AOL email accounts while signed in to their Yahoo account.

The new Mail also connects to Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook to add photos and create “contact cards” with email, telephone and social media information for contacts.

Twitter Inc said in a blog it would provide its advertisers with custom data-driven reports to help them gauge the impact of their ad campaigns on their profits.

The effectiveness of an ad campaign will be measured by dividing an advertiser’s target audience into two groups – one that sees the ads and another that doesn’t – and comparing conversions across the two test groups.

Twitter’s ad revenue per monthly average user has been declining and to stem this it has launched new advertising products, notably its app install ads.

QUEZON CITY, Philippines — The procurement of additional air assets is not yet a priority for the Philippine National Police even after approval of the PNP Modernization Program.

According to PNP Chief P/Dir. Gen. Ricardo Marquez, only procurement of additional equipment for 2016 is included in the PNP modernization program, which is currently with the technical working group of the lower house.

Marquez clarified that such air assets are essential to the PNP especially during operations of the Special Action Force. However, they are quite expensive so the PNP decided to repair its existing helicopters.

According to Marquez, the PNP currently has four helicopters that can be repaired to be mobilized for small operations such as traffic monitoring on EDSA.

The PNP chief clarified that two of these air assets are still grounded due to an existing complaint filed by some officials in 2010 because of an alleged anomalous procurement deal.

“In the last five years eh hindi sya nagamit. So, may dalawang malaking helicopter dyan, yun din kasama sa ire-repair,” said Marquez.

(They have not been used in the last five years. We have two large helicopters that also need repair.)

Even so, Marquez said they are completing the necessary documents for the repair of the defective air assets.

Just recently, 1116 personnel of the PNP Special Action Force and Regional Public Safety Battalion underwent air to ground operation seminar in coordination with the Philippine Airforce.

They were trained in terms of close-air support, troop insertion and casualty evacuation using the helicopters of the Philippine Air Force in a mock operation against the rebels. (UNTV News)

The ceremonial turnover of Japan International Cooperation Agency or JICA to PHIVOLCS of the new equipment for monitoring of earthquake and tsunami.

MAKATI CITY, Philippines — Japan International Cooperation Agency or JICA hands over PHIVOLCS new equipment for earthquake and tsunami monitoring.

These include 10 broadband strong motion seismometers; 36 strong motion seismometers; 19 sea-level monitoring stations and 240 intensity meters.

According to PHIVOLCS director Renato Solidum, the agency will be more accurate now in measuring earthquake and tsunami using the broadband strong motion seismometers.

“Yung ten broadband strong motion recorders kahit magnitude nine pa yung earthquake, mako-compute mo na,” he said. (The 10 broadband strong motion recorders can compute even the magnitude 9 earthquake.)

Even the changes in sea level or the occurrence of tsunami can be easily detected by the sea-level monitoring stations via satellite in the whole country.

The equipment costs 800 million yen or 300 million pesos.

PHIVOLCS said, the Philippines is not lagging behind other countries in terms of earthquake and tsunami monitoring.

Meanwhile, PHIVOLCS is targeting to launch this year a fault finder web and mobile application. Using this app a user can easily locate how close a particular area is to the fault line.

The app shows a map that allows you to click a province, town or barangay. It will tell how far the center of the baranggay is from the fault.

The publics’ level of awareness increased when the valley fault system map was released.

Request for seminars and evaluation of places also increased. After the map’s launch, the number of requests they normally receive in a year was achieved in two months.

Solidum says, the valley fault system map helps warn residents of the potential danger they may face. (UNTV News)

Chinese President Xi Jinping heaped praise on Britain for what he called a “visionary and strategic choice” to strengthen commercial ties with China, as he prepared for a state visit to the United Kingdom that’s expected to be richer in pomp and considerably warmer in tone than his recent trip to the United States.

The trip comes at a time of global anxiety about China’s slowing growth. Xi himself acknowledged “concerns about the Chinese economy”, but sought to allay them in a written interview with Reuters.

China itself is worried about the slowing of the broader global economy, Xi said, even while he expressed confidence that China would weather the current downturn as it reshapes its economy to be more resilient in the future.

That confidence will be on display when Xi arrives in London on Monday evening to kick off a four-day visit that is expected to cement ties between Britain and China, including through a host of business deals.

“The UK has stated that it will be the Western country that is most open to China. This is a visionary and strategic choice that fully meets Britain’s own long-term interest,” Xi said in a written response to questions from Reuters.

“China looks forward to engaging with the UK in a wider range, at a higher level and in greater depth.”

WARMER WELCOME

Xi’s visit comes amid debate in Britain and many other Western countries over what is the best way to engage with a Communist-ruled China that has grown more influential economically and diplomatically, but which maintains stances in areas from human rights to the South China Sea that are often at odds with those widely held in the West.

Such tensions were on display when Xi visited the United States last month, with friction over issues from cyber theft to China’s maritime disputes with its neighbors at the center of discussions.

Xi’s visit to Britain, during which he and his wife Peng Liyuan will stay at Buckingham Palace as guests of Queen Elizabeth II, is expected to be much warmer, with Xi saying it could be the start of a “golden time” in bilateral relations.

Britain was the first Western nation to join the China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) earlier this year, leading to a stampede of other countries signing up and marking an embarrassment for Washington, which had been pressing its allies not to join.

At the time, Britain said joining the AIIB at the founding stage would “create an unrivalled opportunity for the UK and Asia to invest and grow together”.

British finance minister George Osborne set the tone with a preparatory visit to China last month, when he courted Chinese investment into Britain and won praise from Chinese state media for having the “etiquette” not to press human rights issues.

Still, Xi’s visit, the first state visit by a Chinese president since 2005, will not be without potentially awkward moments. Newly installed opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn intends to bring up the issue of human rights when he meets Xi, his official spokesman has said.
“NO GLASS DOORS”

Xi called on Britain and other countries to avoid what he characterized as bias against Chinese companies, as Beijing supports firms in fields from high-speed rail to nuclear technology in their efforts to compete for contracts overseas.

“Competition is necessary for a business to grow, and no one will give away a market to its rivals,” Xi said in comments provided in English. “We hope that such competition is benign and market-based. There should be no swing doors or glass doors which are placed as non-economic or non-market-based barriers.”

One deal expected to be inked during Xi’s visit is a plan for two state-owned Chinese utilities to invest in a 16 billion pound ($25 billion) nuclear power project being built by French utility EDF at Hinkley Point in southwest England.

EDF Energy’s head Vincent de Rivaz has described Xi’s visit as a “timely opportunity” to seal the deal.

China has ambitions to sell its own nuclear technology overseas, including in Western nations. While critics have said that Chinese government support, including cheap financing, for companies in that and other sectors could amount to unfair competition, Xi defended China’s approach.

“Even under market conditions, countries support the growth of their companies in various ways, and such measures should not be all labeled as government subsidy,” Xi said.

His comments were prepared by Chinese government officials, but were reviewed and approved by Xi himself, the government said.

Xi also underscored China’s readiness to strengthen financial cooperation with London, which aims to be an important hub for yuan trading and offshore yuan business and is set to be the first location outside China and Hong Kong to host the issuance of Chinese central bank and finance ministry debt.

“When conditions are in place, China is ready to consider strengthening the connectivity of the financial markets of the two countries,” he said.

WORRIES OVER ECONOMY

Xi acknowledged that the Chinese economy’s slowing was a concern.

“As an economy closely linked to international markets, China cannot stay immune to the lackluster performance of the global economy. We do have concerns about the Chinese economy, and we are working hard to address them. We also worry about the sluggish world economy, which affects all countries, especially developing ones,” he said.

Economists polled by Reuters expect growth to have slowed to 6.8 percent from a year earlier in the third quarter, the weakest pace since the first quarter of 2009 and below the government’s target of 7 percent for the year. GDP figures are due to be published on Monday.

Still, Xi added that the slowing was normal as a part of structural adjustments, as the government seeks to wean it off an over-reliance on investment in infrastructure and housing and to develop new drivers of growth, such as the services sector and high-tech industry.

Xi said the monetary easing steps China had taken to date, as well as its adjustment to the exchange rate mechanism for the yuan in August, which was accompanied by a devaluation of the currency, had helped to defuse risks.

“Going forward, we will deepen market-oriented financial reforms according to law to cultivate an open and transparent capital market that enjoys long-term, stable and sound development,” he said.

U.S. and European businesses have complained about what they see as an increasingly restrictive environment for doing business, for example with new rules on technology sales forcing firms to choose between forgoing the market and handing potentially sensitive data to Chinese authorities.

Xi said China would continue to seek to attract foreign investment, improve the rule of law to enhance the business environment, protect intellectual property rights, and promote fair competition.

FOOTBALLING AMBITION

China has rattled nerves around the region and prompted concern in Western capitals about its increasingly assertive moves to push its territorial claims in the South China Sea, including construction of artificial islands.

Xi was unequivocal in his defense of China’s right to develop the areas it claims as its own.

“The islands and reefs in the South China Sea are Chinese territory since ancient times. They are left to us by our ancestors. The Chinese people will not allow anyone to infringe on China’s sovereignty and related rights and interests in the South China Sea,” he said.

But it is not in China’s interests for there to be instability in the South China Sea, he added.

“China would not want any turbulence there, still less would it be the party to stir up chaos,” Xi said, adding that China would work to manage disputes via talks and ensure freedom of navigation.

On a lighter note, Xi, a football fan, highlighted the potential for further UK-China cooperation on the sport. Xi will visit the Manchester City football club on Friday, accompanied by British Prime Minister David Cameron, according to a schedule of the trip provided by Buckingham Palace.

“My greatest expectation on Chinese football is for the Chinese team to be one of the best in the world and for football to play an important role in making people stronger in body and mind,” Xi said.

LeBron James is likely to miss the rest of the preseason after having an anti-inflammatory injection in his back earlier this week as the banged-up Cleveland Cavaliers wind up their preparations for the regular season.

The Cavaliers have two exhibition games remaining — against the Raptors in Toronto on Sunday and the Dallas Mavericks back in Cleveland on Monday — before they launch their 2015-16 campaign against the Bulls in Chicago on Oct. 27.

“We’ll see what happens at the beginning of next week,” Cavaliers coach David Blatt told reporters after team practice on Friday.

“I certainly don’t expect him to play both (preseason) games and I don’t know if he’ll even play one. We’ll see.”

Four-time most valuable player James on Tuesday received an anti-inflammatory shot to ease discomfort in his back, a precautionary move which he said had become customary for him during the preseason.

“It was all part of the process,” said James, an 11-time NBA All-Star. “We had already known that, looking at the schedule, looking at the preseason, we were going to do that. It’s all part of my maintenance program in the preseason.”

James readily concedes that the Cavaliers, who were beaten by the Golden State Warriors 4-2 in the NBA Finals four months ago, will not be ready to start this season as genuine title challengers due to multiple injuries.

Kyrie Irving (knee surgery), Iman Shumpert (wrist surgery), Kevin Love (shoulder surgery), J.R. Smith (hamstring) and Matthew Dellavedova (sore ankle) are among those players who have either missed games or not played during the preseason.

“I don’t think we will immediately be able to play at a high level because we have so many guys out,” James said. “I don’t think our chemistry is where it needs to be to start the season off.

“I think as we get guys back into the flow of things, guys come back off of injury and we’re able to put the time in on the practice floor, I think we’ll be a much better team.”

(Reuters Health) – Training patients to practice deep relaxation techniques like yoga and meditation – long touted to ease stress and anxiety – may also lead them to make fewer doctor visits, a U.S. study suggests.

Researchers analyzed data on more than 4,400 patients who were referred by their health care providers to the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where they received what’s known as relaxation response training.

Compared to the year before the training, in the year afterward, these people had an average 43 percent reduction in their use of health services. Over the same period, health services use was little changed for another group of 13,000 similar patients who didn’t receive relaxation response training.

Plenty of evidence over the last few decades has linked practices like meditation and yoga to beneficial physiological changes in the body ranging from better cardiac function to reduced inflammation, noted lead study author Dr. James Stahl, director of the Institute for Technology Assessment at Massachusetts General.

What the current study offers is a link between these forms of stress reduction and fewer visits to the doctor, Stahl added by email.

“Meditation and yoga reduce stress, which in turn promotes wellness, which in turn reduces seeking and using healthcare resources,” said Stahl, who practices at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire.

The relaxation response elicited by practices such as meditation, prayer and yoga is meant to help people counteract the toxic impact of chronic stress by slowing down their breathing and relaxing their muscles.

In yoga, for example, a sun salutation is a series of poses done in a fluid sequence and designed to focus on breathing and improving muscle strength and flexibility.

Such relaxation techniques can be an antidote to the fight-or-flight response, a survival mechanism that kicks in when people feel threatened and experience a surge in stress hormones that cause muscles to tense and the heart to race, Stahl and his colleagues write in PLOS ONE.

For the current study, the researchers reviewed medical billing records for patients treated throughout Partners HealthCare, a system that includes Massachusetts General and several other Boston-area healthcare facilities.

All the patients in the treatment group had gone through a Relaxation Response Resiliency Program (3RP) at Mass General’s Benson-Henry Institute. One year after their training, these patients’ clinical visits had decreased by 42 percent, lab use declined by 44 percent and procedures dropped by 21 percent, compared to the year before training.

Emergency department visits dropped to about 1.7 a year from 3.7 in the year before the intervention.

One limitation of the study is that it focused only on utilization, not on the cost of care or outcomes of the relaxation response training such as the potential to reduce mortality, the authors acknowledge. This makes it impossible to assess whether the intervention is cost-effective.

Also, because the mind-body training provided in the study integrated numerous techniques, it’s not possible to tease out the impact individual activities such as meditation or cognitive skills training might have in isolation, said Bei-Hung Chang, a researcher at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester who wasn’t involved in the study.

Even so, the findings add to a growing body of evidence suggesting that these practices can reduce health costs, Chang said by email.

“One of the obstacles in integrating mind and body techniques into the health care system is the lack of empirical evidence from rigorous studies,” Chang said. “The findings from this study . . . could serve to overcome this obstacle and hopefully convince those patients and clinicians who are looking for empirical evidence to endorse these techniques.”
