MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) is set to implement electronic ticketing (e-ticketing) system to address issues on passenger overloading in the country’s seaports, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced Friday.
DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade made the announcement when he led the conduct of the Maritime Safety Summit for Domestic Shipping.
Tugade said the new system, which is being eyed to be implemented before the end of the year, is part of the government’s initiatives for the efficient delivery of port services.
“The government will continue to do many things, not only in making sure of the safety and security but in modernizing our maritime sector. I hope, magkaroon ‘ho ng matamis na bunga ito para sa kapakanan ng bayan, ng mga mananakay at mga gumagamit ng karagatan. Let safety be not a matter of convention, symposium or fora, but a day-to-day matter of concern, attitude, culture, and advocacy,” Tugade said in a statement.
During the summit, the transportation chief also emphasized the need for the modernization of facilities, equipment, and processes of the maritime sector to improve the safety, security and comfort of the sea-traveling public.
The DOTr said initiatives geared toward this end include the phaseout of wooden-hull motorbancas, port improvements to enhance passenger convenience, implementation of an educational program that fosters a culture of safety and security in the open seas, and completion of all lighthouses in the country.
The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), for its part, stressed the importance of collective work to improve the efficiency and safety of maritime operations.
“Everything we, the government, are aiming for, can only be fully achieved through our teamwork. Let us continue to act together for the growth and development of our maritime industry — one that is safe, efficient, and modern, one that upholds safe ships, safer people, and a cleaner environment; and one that we, as Filipinos, can be proud of,” MARINA OIC Administrator Vice Admiral Narciso Vingson said.
