MANILA, Philippines – In response to the administrative order issued by the Department of Agriculture (DA), the local government of Dinalupihan in Bataan has set up three quarantine checkpoints in Daang Bago, Tucop, and Bangal.

Such move is to prevent entry and spread of a still unknown pig disease that infested sounders of swine in still undisclosed locations in the country.

According to Dr. Paul Foronda, the checkpoints have been set up to safeguard the province’s livestock farmers from imminent threats of swine disease.

“We respectfully ask for the cooperation of all hog raisers and transporters. Please comply with the requirements for inter-provincial transport of animals,” Foronda, the municipal veterinary of Dinalupihan, said.

Foronda advises all transporters to present the following documents at the Veterinary Quarantine Checkpoints:

1) a valid veterinary health certificate issued by a duly licensed veterinarian concurred by a government veterinarian

2) a valid shipping permit issued by the Provincial Veterinary Office of the place of origin

Foronda said failure to present the above mentioned documents, the cargoes will not be allowed entry and will be sent back to the place of origin.

Since the first day of the checkpoints on August 25, the official said they already intercepted several livestock transporters that were denied entry, some because of fake documents.

Over the weekend, Agriculture Secretary William Dar confirmed that the DA is currently monitoring four areas where pig infestation has been reported though he refused to disclose the location as they are still waiting for the result of the test in the infested pig’s sample.

Pig deaths were also reported in an area in Rizal but the DA said the infested pigs had already been culled. – MNP (with details from Rey Pelayo)
