MANILA, Philippines – Two members of the Philippine Army and one from the Marines have been selected as this year’s outstanding soldier awardees, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) announced Monday.
Lieutenant Colonel John Paul Baldomar of the Philippine Army, Major Romulo Dimayuga of the Philippine Marines, and Master Sergeant Ramil Caporas of the Army received Metrobank Foundation’s Outstanding Filipinos – Award for Soldiers for rendering service above and beyond their call of duty.
The AFP said in a news release that Baldomar has been in the active service for 22 years.
In 2001, he spearheaded an initiative that rallied his troop to respond to the plight of the 95 internally displaced Tiruray families in Datu Unsay, Maguindanao.
His unit collaborated with the local government and non-government organizations to implement community-based programs and support the development of infrastructures from school buildings to farm-to-market roads.
Dimayuga, meanwhile, has been in military service for 19 years.
In 2006, his leadership as a platoon commander of a Force Recon Platoon became key in crippling the forces of the most notorious terrorist group in the country by infiltrating their stronghold in Sulu.
This led to the neutralization of its top leader who was tagged as one of the most wanted men in Southeast Asia and listed as one of FBI’s most wanted terrorists.
Caporas, on the other hand, led a team of Explosive Ordnance Disposal experts during the Marawi crisis which resulted in the recovery and proper disposal of 1,000 improvised explosive devices.
The soldiers were presented in a ceremony held at the Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City.
“You have proven your diligence and perseverance for the advancement of our country and our fellow men through the simple yet extraordinary achievements in the performance of your duties,” AFP chief of staff General Benjamin Madrigal Jr. said.
Each of the awardees will receive a cash prize of P1 Million, a gold medallion, and a trophy during the awarding ceremony set to be held this month.
