MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is eyeing to open the first 10-kilometer portion of the Cavite-Laguna Expressway (CALAX) in October.

This CALAX segment starts from Mamplasan exit of South Luzon Expressway to the Santa Rosa-Tagaytay Interchange, according to the DPWH.

DPWH Secretary Mark Villar said this portion of the toll road is expected to serve around 10,000 motorists daily and ease the heavy flow of vehicles passing Governor’s Drive, Aguinaldo Highway and Santa Rosa-Tagaytay Road.

“So ‘yung mga pupuntang Laguna, ‘yung mga pupunta sa Tagaytay, puwede na nilang gamitin ito, mas mabilis ito,” Villar told reporters following the inspection and drive through on the road Tuesday.

CALAX is a four-lane, 45-kilometer expressway which will connect Cavite Expressway (CAVITEx) in Kawit to South Luzon Expressway (SLEx) at the Mamplasan exchange in Biñan City, Laguna. It will have eight interchanges in Kawit, Daang Hari, Governor’s Drive, Aguinaldo Highway, Silang, Sta. Rosa-Tagaytay, Technopark, Laguna Boulevard and a toll barrier before SLEx.

The entire road project is expected to be completed before the end of the term of President Rodrigo Duterte in 2022.

Once it is completed, Villar said the usual two-hour travel time from SLEx to CAVITEx will be reduced to 45 minutes to an hour.

It is seen to benefit growing industrial, commercial and real estate centers in the Southern Tagalog region. RRD (with details from Correspondent Benedict Samson)
