MANILA, Philippines – The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Tuesday said it is eyeing to get the help of the International Police and ASEAN police in arresting heinous crimes convicts released due to the good conduct time allowance (GCTA) law.
DILG Secretary Eduardo Año said that based on the information they received, some of the 1,914 convicts freed on good conduct credits have left the country after President Rodrigo Duterte issued a 15-day deadline for them to surrender.
“Ina-anticipate lang natin yung mga coordination kung sakaling ma-confirm yan ay may kausap tayo at magamit natin yung set up ng cooperation ng INTERPOL saka ASEANAPOL sa mga ganitong pagkakataon,” he said.
Año added the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) will track down these inmates following Duterte’s order to treat these freed convicts as fugitives from justice if they fail to surrender for the recomputation of their GCTAs within 15 days.
Since the president issued the deadline, the PNP reported that more than 100 convicts have surrendered and are being processed for their return to jail.
The DILG chief further stated authorities are now preparing to launch a mass arrest after the deadline passes on Sept. 19. RRD (with details from Correspondent Grace Casin)
