The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) arrested eight Vietnamese on Thursday (September 26) for allegedly poaching sharks along the coast of Barangay Mangsee in Balabac, Palawan.
The PCG said they received reports about a foreign vessel sailing in the Philippine coast without proper documents.
According to the suspected poachers, they were unaware that they were already sailing into Philippine territory, and added that the sharks they caught were caught in Vietnamese waters.
Authorities found dead sharks and dried shark skin and bones inside the Vietnamese vessel.
PCG Palawan Spokesperon Lt. Commander Christian Jazmin said the Vietnamese nationals will undergo inquest proceedings and will face charges for illegal entry and for violating Republic Act 9147 or Wildlife Act.
