The National Historial Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) aims to open the first phase of the Metropolitan Theater by 2020.
During their inspection on Monday (October 7), the NHCP said they plan to open the two wings of the theater by 2020 and open the new Metropolitan Theater Complex by 2021.
Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso and National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) Chairman Virgilio Almario also attended the inspection.
“February kasi ang target is Arts Month and May is Heritage Month (The target is by February because it is Arts Month and May is Heritage Month),” according to NHCP Chairman Dr. Rene Escalante.
According to Escalante, there were problems with the conservation plan which led to the delay in the restoration of the theater.
She said there are still artworks to be reviewed since its previous restoration in 1978.
“This was supposed to start early part of the Duterte Administration. It just so happen that there were some problems that were encountered and some unforeseen developments,” she said.
Escalante added there will be a new management team that will follow the original design of the theater when it opened in 1931.—AAC (with reports from Harlene Delgado)
