SWS: Fewer Filipino families consider themselves poor

Around 42% of Filipino families consider themselves poor according to the Social Weather Stations (SWS) which is a three-point recovery from 45% in March 2019.

An estimate of 10.3 million families consider themselves ‘mahirap’ or poor based on the latest SWS survey conducted from September 27-30.

It dropped compared to the 11 million Filipinos families that that considered themselves poor in June 2019.

“The resulting 42% three-quarter average proportion of Self-Rated Poor families for 2019 is 6 points below the 48% four-quarter average for 2018,” according to the SWS report.

There is also a 6-point recovery in the September 2019 survey on families who rated their quality of food. From the 35% (est. 8.5 million) in June 2019 food poor families, it dropped to 29% of families based on the latest survey.

Meanwhile, an estimate 13% (3.2 million families) of families are newly non-poor while 5.6% (est. 1.4 million) are newly poor.—AAC
