MANILA, Philippines – After 10 years of waiting, the Court has finally delivered the verdict against the suspects in the gruesome murder of 58 individuals dubbed as the Ampatuan Massacre.
On Thursday (December 19), Judge Jocelyn Solis-Reyes of the Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 221 sentenced brothers Andal ‘Unsay’ Ampatuan Jr. and Zaldy ‘Puti’ Ampatuan ‘guilty beyond reasonable doubt’ of 57 counts of murder.
They were sentenced to suffer the penalty of Reclusion Perpetua or 40 years in prison without Parole pursuant to R.A. 9346.
Other members of the Ampatuan family who received similar verdict were Datu Anwar Sajid, Datu Anwar Jr, and Datu Anwar Sr.
The case against the Ampatuan patriarch, Andal Sr., who died of liver cancer in July 2015, was dismissed on October 14, 2019.
Andal Sr.’s other son, Sajid Islam and his nephew Akmad ‘Tato’ Sr., and a civilian member of the family Jimmy Ampatuan, meanwhile, were acquitted due to ‘reasonable doubt.’
They were ordered to be immediately released from jail “unless they are being detained for some other lawful causes.”
