MANILA, Philippines – The state weather bureau on Thursday said it is monitoring two low pressure areas (LPA) that may bring rains in parts of the country ahead of the holidays.
In its 4 p.m. bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said one of the LPAs has entered the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) on Thursday afternoon.
It was last spotted at 860 kilometers east southeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur.
The trough or extension of the LPA is now affecting the northeastern section of Mindanao.
PAGASA said that, in particular, the Caraga, Northern Mindanao, as well as Central Visayas and Leyte provinces will experience cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and isolated thunderstorms due to the trough of LPA.
Cagayan, Isabela and Aurora will also have cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers and thunderstorms while Metro Manila and the rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms.
PAGASA said if the thunderstorms, which are caused by the easterlies, become severe, it may bring possible flashfloods and landslides.
The state weather bureau said the LPA within PAR is not likely to develop into a tropical depression but it might cross the Visayas-Mindanao areas this weekend.
Meanwhile, the shallow LPA still outside PAR was spotted at 2,670 kilometers east of Davao City. It is seen to enter PAR by December 23 or 24.
PAGASA said that compared to the LPA currently inside PAR, this shallow LPA has a bigger chance of developing into a storm.
