MANILA, Philippines – Two individuals were reportedly injured while using firecrackers as the Department of Health (DOH) started its annual tally of fireworks-related injuries during the holiday season.
The DOH said the victims, a 23-year old male from Metro Manila and a four-year old girl from the Cagayan Valley region, sustained burns. The male was reported to have been hurt by a “sky-rocket” while the girl was injured by a yet to be identified firecracker.
Both have received treatment for their wounds and were sent home after.
The health department said the current number is lower than the six fireworks-related injuries recorded in the same period in 2018.
The DOH also noted a 68-percent decline in firecracker-related cases from December 21 to January 1 which it attributed to President Rodrigo Duterte’s executive order regulating the use of certain firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices.
Since Saturday, the DOH has placed all government-run hospitals under code white alert, which would ensure the readiness of the medical staff to respond to any emergency situation during the holiday revelry.
The code white alert will remain hoisted until January 5, 2020. – RRD (with details from Correspondent Aiko Miguel)
