MANILA, Philippines – The number of individuals who were reportedly injured while using firecrackers has climbed to 22 ahead of the New Year revelry, the Department of Health (DOH) reported Friday.

The DOH said the victims, mostly male age 14 to 60, sustained burns and eye injuries while another suffered severe damage that needed to be amputated.

The health department last Saturday began its annual tally of fireworks-related injuries during the holiday season.

The DOH reminded the public anew to refrain from using firecrackers and instead watch fireworks display in designated areas in their community to prevent any injuries.

In preparation for the new year revelry, the health department has placed all government-run hospitals under code white alert, which would ensure readiness of the medical staff to respond to any emergency situation.

The code white alert will last until January 5, 2020.  – RRD (with details from Correspondent Aiko Miguel)
