MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Health (DOH) on Monday reported that the number of individuals who were injured while using firecrackers has climbed to 54 ahead of the New Year revelry.
The DOH said the victims — mostly male aged 1 to 71— sustained burns and eye injuries while two suffered severe body injuries that needed amputation.
Most of the cases were reported in Metro Manila with 21, followed by the Ilocos region with six cases.
The department said the current number of injuries is higher than the 50 cases recorded in the same period in 2018.
The DOH has renewed its call to the public to skip fireworks and instead use other noise-makers to avoid any firecracker-related injuries this holiday season.
“Pwede namang mag-ingay at salubungin ang bagong taon nang hindi paputok ang gagamitin para ma-prevent natin iyong mga sakuna,” Health Undersecretary Eric Domingo said. – RRD (with details from Correspondent Aiko Miguel)
