MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Wednesday (Jan. 15) recommended having the entire Taal Volcano Island turned into a permanent no settlement area.
Phivolcs officer in charge, Usec Renato Solidum said living on the island poses danger to human lives as the volcanic activity continues to spew ash, cause tremors, and create fissures around the volcano.
Based on Phivolcs data, the movement under the Taal Volcano Island has caused its level to drop by three meters.
Phivolcs also urged the local government units to come up with a hazard sensitive land use plan.
“Unang-una, it’s a permanent danger zone. It’s a protected area also and it’s a national park […] ikonsidera talaga yung panganib na pwede pang ma experience in the future,” Solidum added. — /mbmf
