MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Roa Duterte has formally appointed the Philippine National Police (PNP) leadership to PGen. Archie Gamboa.
As the 23rd chief of the national police force, Gamboa said he will still prioritize the administration’s campaign against illegal drugs and the internal cleansing of the PNP.
“These are two programs which I started when I was still the oversight committee chairman. When I was deputy chief for operations and then when I assumed as OIC and now as chief PNP, this will be my priority,” Gamboa said.
He also said he will put a stop on the kidnapping of Chinese nationals being carried out by their fellow citizens.
“We will be establishing probably Chinese desk and cross training of the language and culture so that mas maintindihan natin, why they are doing this and how they are going to do it,” he added.
Gamboa also said he will be reshuffling the officials in the police force as evaluation of their performance is being conducted.
“Ito namang evaluation na ito, it did not just come from thin air. Alam na ito ng lahat na dapat na na-evaluate since October […] just our January 7 command conference, it was also publicly announced on the ratings of the different commanders in the field,” Gamboa said.
One of the vacant positions in the organization is the Chief Directorial Staff, the 4th highest position, which was formerly held by PLtGen. Guillermo Eleazar.
Following Gamboa’s appointment as the new PNP Chief, Eleazar elevated as the Number 3 of the PNP or the Deputy Chief for Operations.
PLtGen. Camilo Cascolan, on the other hand, became the number 2 man of the PNP as the Deputy Chief for Administration.
Gamboa was appointed as the officer in charge of the PNP on October 14, 2019, after the early retirement of former PNP Chief Oscar Albayalde due to his alleged involvement on the Ninja Cops issue.
Like his predecessors former chief Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa and Albalyalde, Gamboa was also a member of PMA Sinagtala Class of 1986.
Gamboa is set to retire on September 2, when he reaches the PNP mandatory age of retirement of 56. — (from the report of Lea Ylagan) /mbmf
