MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) is currently observing the condition of a Chinese boy in Cebu City after showing symptoms of coronavirus.
The DOH said the boy is now in stable condition though he is not yet recommended for discharge.
The five-year-old boy remains in isolation until the Victorian Infectious Disease Reference Laboratory in Melbourne, Australia completes its test on the boy’s blood sample.
“Kaunting ubo at wala ng lagnat pero ang nakakapagtaka lang ay iyong nanay na wala namang sintomas na ipinakikita (The boy only has a cough and his fever subsided. We’re just curious why the mother didn’t show any symptoms),” noted Health Secretary Francisco Duque III.
“So mayroon pa ring prosibilidad na baka hindi naman talaga ito novel coronavirus (So it is still possible that maybe this is not novel coronavirus),” he added.
The boy traveled from Wuhan City in Hubei province where the new strain of coronavirus was first detected.
He arrived in the Philippines supposedly to study English but he was delivered straight to the hospital due to his illness.
Meanwhile, DOH-Region 7 allayed fears among residents on the possible spread of the virus across Cebu.
The agency is now monitoring 12 other individuals, specifically the medical personnel, with whom the boy had close contact.
The DOH-7 said the persons concerned are not showing any signs of viral infection, so far. MNP (with reports from Aiko Miguel)
