Member schools of the Federation of Associations of Private School Administrators (FAPSA) will not increase their tuition this school year.
FAPSA president Eleazardo Kasilag said this is in response to the Department of Education’s (Deped) appeal to private schools to defer increases on tuition and other school fees amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Kasilag said several of the private school members even lowered their tuition and miscellaneous fees.
“Nagbawas pa nga ng tuition fee ang iba sa amin. Iyong iba nga nagbibigay pa ng ibang items na makakatulong sa mga bata (Some of our members have lowered their tuition. Others are even giving away school items that students can use),” he said.
Meanwhile, Deped Undersecretary Jesse Mateo said they understand the situation of private school institutions. He also said the Education Department is already coordinating with the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) to provide assistance to private school teachers affected by the pandemic.
Deped is also calling on private schools to implement a transparent structure in case they have to increase their tuition.
“Medyo tataas din ang gastusin ng mga pribadong eskwelahan mas lalo na kung pinatupad iyong kanilang iniibang pamamaraan ng paghahatid (edukasyon) para matuloy lang ang pag-aaral ng mga kabataan, (Expenses of private schools might also increase especially if they are adapting to a different mode of learning just the continue students’ education)” Mateo said.
As of June 26, there are over 14 million enrollees recorded which is 50 percent of the total enrollees recorded last year, according to Deped. AAC (with reports from Dante Amento)
