
MUNTINLUPA CITY, Philippines — A crane that was positioned for its next task has tilted, causing a steel girder from the Skyway Extension project to fall at the East Service Road in Bgy. Cupang, Muntinlupa Saturday morning (November 21).
Based on the initial report of PCpl Karlo Ferrer, the responding police officer, the incident took place at 8:50 in the morning of Saturday, Nov. 21, and has killed one person and injured four others.
It also damaged six vehicles – a taxi, an L300 van, an SUV, and three motorcycles.
A statement from project contractor, EEI Corporation, said the casualties were rushed by ambulances from the Skyway O&M Corp. and EEI to various hospitals.
EEI added that the company is monitoring the progress of the injured and has been getting in touch with their next of kin for proper coordination.
It also insured that they extend any assistance that the casualties may need.
“Our hearts and prayers go with the affected families. This is an unfortunate and heart-breaking accident that must not happen again,” the statement further said.
“We will review immediately our safety and operating protocols as we build a strategic infrastructure for the public’s convenience,” it added.
Meanwhile, Conglomerate San Miguel Corp., among the companies which has a hand in the construction of the expressway, has also issued its statement on the accident.
“We deeply regret this unfortunate accident and assure a full and thorough investigation. Our thoughts and concern are with the victims and we will make sure they will get all the help they need. Their welfare is our priority,” the statement reads.
“This unfortunate incident sets back the completion of the Skyway Extension Project. From the December 2020 deadline, target completion is now February 2021,” the SMC statement concluded. — /mbmf
