MANILA, Philippines — Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Delfin Lorenzana on Wednesday (December 30) confirmed that the COVID-19 vaccines used by the Presidential Security Group (PSG) were “smuggled”.
The National Defense Secretary in an interview said the vaccines were considered “smuggled” because the Food and Drug Administration did not authorize their use.
However, the secretary said he does not know who authorized the entry of the vaccines or who administered them.
He was also not aware that several members of the PSG and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) were already inoculated with the vaccine.
Despite this, Lorenzana reiterated tha there was no breach of security since the vaccination was for the safety of the ones protecting the president.
Meanwhile, PSG Chief Colonel Jesus Durante said they did not ask the president about the vaccination which started as early as September. The close-in security personnel of the president received two doses of the vaccine, he added. AAC (with reports from Dante Amento)
