MANILA, Philippines — Russia’s Gamaleya Research Institute has withdrawn its COVID-19 vaccine, Sputnik V, application for the Phase 3 clinical trial in the Philippines.
Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Assistant Secretary Leah Buendia however, said Gamaleya will still continue its application for Emergency Use Authorization (EUA).
“They formally informed us at tsaka po technical group on evaluation na wini-withdraw na po nila iyong kanilang application for clinical trial. Rather, they will apply for EUA na lang po (and the technical group on evaluation that they are withdrawing their application for clinical trial. Rather, they will just apply for EUA)“ she said.
Over 1 million individuals were already inoculated with the Sputnik V vaccine after it was registered in August 2020. The vaccine is already distributed in Argentina, Belarus, and other countries.
Meanwhile, DOST Secretary Fortunato Dela Peña said vaccine manufacturers are not required to conduct clinical trials in the country. Aside from Gamaleya, Astrazenica has also withdrawn its plan to conduct clinical trials in the country. -AAC (with reports from Rosalie Coz)
