MANILA, Philippines—Former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV said that he intends to run for president in the 2022 national elections.

In his Twitter post, Trillanes said he is ready to become the principal candidate for president under 1SAMBAYAN Coalition.

This was after he reported that Vice President Leni Robredo might be preparing to run for Governor of Camarines Sur in 2022.

He clarified, though, that he is not dividing the opposition and is willing to give way to Robredo in case she decides to run for the presidency.

“I never said that VP Leni already decided to run for Governor. In fact, it is very clear in my statement that I would give way to her in case she finally decides to run for President,” he said.

Both Atty. Barry Gutierrez and Liberal Party Stalwart Cong. Teddy Baguilat said that the Vice President still has no decision regarding the 2022 national elections.

Meanwhile, in reaction to Trillanes’ statement, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque Jr. said it is Trillanes’ right as a Filipino to aim in becoming president. However, Roque said Robredo might still have a plan in running.

“Libre pong mangarap, hayaan po nating mangarap si dating Senador Trillanes, karapatan po niya iyan bilang isang Pilipino. Pangalawa, mukhang hindi naman po siya makakatakbo dahil nilinaw ni Vice President Leni na tatakbo pa rin siya, at least nandiyan pa rin ang plano,” he said.

(It is free to dream, let former Senator Trillanes dream. It is his right as a Filipino. Secondly, it looks like Vice President Leni would still run, or at least, there is still a plan.) -AAC (with reports from Nel Maribojoc)
