Kiko slightly weakens after landfall but Signal No. 4 remains over Batanes

MANILA, Philippines — Typhoon Kiko has slightly weakened on Saturday morning after its landfall in Ivana, Batanes at around 8:30 a.m.

In its 11 a.m. bulletin, the state weather bureau PAGASA said “Kiko” was last spotted over the coastal waters of Itbayat, Batanes moving north northwestward at 15 km/h, packing maximum sustained winds of 205 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 250 km/h.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 4 remains hoisted over Batanes where very destructive typhoon-force winds are prevailing or expected within 12 hours.

Here are the other areas where tropical cyclone wind signals are raised:

TCWS No.3 (Destructive typhoon-force winds prevailing or expected within 18 hours)

  • northeastern portion of Babuyan Islands

TCWS No.2 (Damaging gale-force to storm-force winds prevailing or expected within 24 hours)

  • rest of Babuyan Islands

TCWS No.1 (Strong winds prevailing or expected within 36 hours)

  • northern portion of mainland Cagayan (Santa Ana, Gonzaga, Lal-Lo, Gattaran, Lasam, Allacapan, Santa Teresita, Buguey, Aparri, Camalaniugan, Ballesteros, Abulug, Pamplona, Sanchez-Mira, Claveria, Santa Praxedes),
  • northern portion of Apayao (Flora, Pudtol, Luna, Santa Marcela, Calanasan)
  • northern portion of Ilocos Norte (Pagudpud, Adams, Dumalneg, Vintar, Bangui, Burgos)

The typhoon is expected to bring heavy to intense with at times torrential rains over Batanes in the next  24 hours.

Moderate to heavy with at times intense rains are also likely over Babuyan Islands, Cagayan, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Abra, Apayao, and Kalinga. Under these conditions, scattered to widespread flooding (including flash floods) and rain-induced landslides are possible especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazard as identified in hazard maps.

Monsoon rains will also be experienced over Metro Manila, the rest of Ilocos Region, and the western sections of Central Luzon and Southern Luzon in the next 24 hours.

The typhoon is forecast to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility tomorrow evening or on Monday early morning. Outside the PAR, the typhoon will continue to move northward over the East China Sea.
