MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Sunday, September 19, warned individuals and groups who stage protest actions and deliberately defying quarantine protocols thereby putting at risk the safety of the community against COVID-19.
The reminder came after members of the group Gising Maharlika held a protest recently at the Liwasang Bonifacio in Manila to oppose the vaccination program of the national government. Most of them were not wearing face masks to emphasize that they do not believe in the coronavirus.
PNP Chief Police General Guillermo Lorenzo Eleazar said that the PNP respects their beliefs, however, the group should also learn to respect the beliefs of other Filipinos who abide by the minimum public health safety and other rules to ensure their protection from the deadly virus.
“Holding protest actions to insist on what you believe in does not make it right. It is but plain and simple acts of defiance and irresponsibility because you are putting our personnel and other civilian population at risk of being infected,” he said.
The PNP chief said that the police showed maximum tolerance despite the group’s breach of COVID-19 protocols.
“Ipinakita ng inyong kapulisan ang maximum tolerance at pagrespeto sa inyong paniniwala nang magsagawa kayo ng kilos-protesta na walang suot na proteksyon,” Eleazar said.
“Binabalaan ko kayo na maaring hindi na kayo pagbigyan kapag inulit pa ninyo ang pambabastos sa paniniwala ng karamihan nating kababayan at pambabastos ninyo sa mga patakaran ng public health, (I am warning you, we might not be let this pass if you disrespect the beliefs of the majority again and if you disrespect the protocols of public health)” Eleazar said.
He also added that the PNP will strictly monitor if there will be protest actions by those anti-vaccine groups and individuals that would violate the minimum public health standard. AAC
