MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine government is looking to vaccinate up to 90 percent of the country’s population against COVID-19 by February 2022 in preparation for the May elections.
National Task Force (NTF) against COVID-19 and vaccine czar Carlito Galvez Jr. said the government has started preparing for what he called phase two of the country’s vaccine procurement, which takes into consideration the 2022 polls.
“Pinaplano na rin po natin ‘yung ano pagdating po ng eleksyon na kailangan by February, matapos na po tayo lahat-lahat or at least 90 percent,” Galvez said during a pre-recorded meeting with President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday night.
Galvez said the government has started negotiations for the procurement of more COVID-19 vaccine shots as well as booster jabs.
“At the same time, before the election, at least ‘yung mga dapat mag-boosters, makapag-boosters na rin po,” he said.
So iyong programming po namin, Mr. President, before election dapat protetado nap o lahat ang mga Pilipino,” he added.
Galvez noted that the country’s vaccine supply has started to stabilize and that that demand for shots was already being met.
He said the Philippines is expecting around 20 million more vaccine doses by mid-October.
The Philippines has so far administered some 42.6 million COVID-19 shots nationwide, of which around 23.2 million were given as first shot while over 19.3 million individuals were fully vaccinated.
