MANILA, Philippines — The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) stand by their pronouncement that New People’s Army (NPA) leader in Mindanao, Jorge ‘Ka Oris’ Madlos died in a legitimate operation by the government troops.
The AFP also dared the Communist Party of the Philippines-New Peoples Army-National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF) to prove their allegation that their leader was ambushed.
Maria Malaya, the wife of Ka Oris, claimed that there was no encounter nor airstrike in Impasug-ong, Bukidnon where the NPA commander died; rather, he was gunned down by the government authorities on his way to a medical check-up.
The AFP, however, insists that they do not engage in ambuscades in compliance with the International Humanitarian Law.
“It is also my responsibility to see to it na all our operations are legitimate. In that case, I’m really confident na magsabi sa inyo that the operation conducted against Ka Oris was really a legitimate operation,” said EASTMINCOM Commander LtGen. Greg Almerol.
Philippine Army 4th Infantry Division Commander, MGen. Romeo Brawner, Jr., also said that they have long been monitoring Ka Oris’ movements and whereabouts.
“For several months the 4th Infantry Division, especially the 403rd Infantry has been on continuous operation. Tuloy-tuloy po yung operation nila and the target is Ka Oris and finally after several months, last Saturday, October 30, we were able to accomplish our mission,” Brawner said.
Meanwhile, the AFP and the PNP ensure their readiness for possible retaliation by the terrorist group.
The military and police authorities have placed their units and offices on heightened alert.
The AFP believes that the demise of Ka Oris is a major blow to the NPA and that they expect members of the terrorist group in Mindanao to surrender following the death of their leader.
“We’ll continue our combat operations, our focus military operations against them until such time na they will surrender. We’ll continue the pressure, lahat ng combat operations against sa mga naiwan pa doon na mga kasama ni Ka Oris,” Alemrol said.
Ka Oris’ remains are still in the custody of the AFP while awaiting the result of the RT-PCR test. Should the test yield positive, the body will immediately be cremated.
If it turns positive, the body will be turned over to the PNP and the LGU and, there, may be claimed by his family. —/mbmf (from the report of UNTV Correspondent Dante Amento)
