The Philippine National Police (PNP) said it has filed complaints against Pilar Abra Mayor Maro Somera, Vice Mayor Jaja Josefina Somera Disono, and three others over a standoff that occurred last week.

In a statement issued Thursday, PNP chief Police General Dionardo Carlos said charges for violation of the Expanded Trafficking in Persons Act were filed against Somera and Disono.

Meanwhile, charges of serious disobedience to an agent of a person in authority were filed against Robert Boreta and Emmanuel Nicanor Valera, both personnel of the Pilar municipal government, and Jericho Toreno Bufil, a helper of Disono.

Bufil was also charged with attempted murder.

“The cases filed are the product of the evidence and testimonies that our police investigators were able to gather. Those involved individuals will be made to submit themselves to the judicial proceeding,” Carlos said.

The case stemmed from a standoff at the house of Disono where armed men sought refuge after running through a police checkpoint and shooting at their patrol car.

A security personnel of Disono was killed in the incident while two police officers were injured.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government earlier warned political candidates that bearing firearms without permission during the gun ban is an election offense, as well as employing private armies to intimidate their political rivals and voters.
