MANILA, Philippines – One of the candidates as head of the Philippine National Police (PNP) hinted of taking an early retirement.

In his message in a mass wedding held at the Camp Crame on Thursday morning, Chief of Directorial Staff Deputy Director General Marcelo Garbo Jr. said that he is ready to take an early retirement if his family wishes it of him.

“I’m now traversing to the 38 years of service, I will be retiring which I hope and I think I want to retire earlier but if I will be retiring in full, I will be serving the government for 39 years,” he said.

Garbo added that his family who did not forsake him even if he had done something wrong is important to him, and he can also leave the service for them.

“And in my 38 years of service, I have seen the importance of family.”

He added that he wants to give the others a chance to lead the national police.

“I am confused of what’s happening now, so I guess it’s time to go and give others the chance and I think I have done a lot for the service.”

Garbo is part of the PMA Class 1981 and is set to retire on March 2016.

General Garbo is a batch mate of resigned PNP chief Director General Alan Purisima and PNP OIC Police Deputy Director General Leonardo Espina who is set to retire this coming July 2015.

If Garbo will retire early, those who are from the PMA Class 1982 like CIDG chief Police Director Benjamin Magalong, Directorate for Operation Police Director Ricardo Marquez and NCRPO chief Police Director Carmelo Valmoria will have a chance to be the chief of the PNP.

The President, however, still holds the prerogative to assign the next PNP chief because according to the law, he can designate (as PNP chief) anyone from the one star rank in the PNP. (Aiko Miguel / UNTV News)
