MANILA, Philippines – A government agency informed Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano that it gathered intelligence about a serious threat to his life due to the ongoing debate regarding the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL).

The agency recommended that Cayetano intensify his security measures.

“[The warning] comes from sources who have given me correct information, that’s why we take it seriously,” Cayetano said.

“[Intelligence officers] on the ground are also coordinating with us, they have also intercepted something, but let me stay there because it is still unverified.”

“That there are politicians or politician in particular and politician in general that have to be sacrificed for the BBL to be passed,” he added.

Because of the discovery of the threat on his life, Cayetano’s trips to some parts of the country will also be affected.

Cayetano believes this threat is an offshoot of the misinformation proliferating in Marawi City and Central Luzon saying he is anti-Muslim.

He explained that being anti-Muslim is significantly different from being anti-MILF.

Despite this, Cayetano believes he has not lost the trust of the Muslim community in Taguig.

Meanwhile, Cayetano called the MILF report on the Mamasapano incident too biased.

“Their fact-finding is too dubious and too biased,” he said.

Despite the threat to his life, Cayetano says he will continue pushing for what he believes is the suitable peace process in Mindanao. (Bryan De Paz / UNTV News)
