CAVITE, Philippines — More than 500 houses at a subdivision in Cavite are now using prepaid electricity from meralco.
Each house is installed with a smart meter that can function only when it is loaded. Residents are finding the system better than postpaid.
With prepaid, consumers may control their electric consumption and ideally save more.
Alexa Montejo who lives alone, uses prepaid electricity and only spends P300 monthly. It is P100 lower than her previous bill of P400 when she was still using postpaid.
“Yung sa postpaid po kasi unlimited siya; hindi mo alam kung mataas na yung ginagamit mo. Unlike sa prepaid, alam ko kung namomonitor mo siya kasi may nag-tetext sayo everyday na yung na-consume mo is 10, 12, 20 pesos. Alam mo kung paano siya tipirin,” she said.
(Postpaid is unlimited so you don’t know if you’re usage is high. Unlike in prepaid, you could monitor your consumption because they send text message every day, whether you have consumed p10 or 20 pesos. You will have an idea how to budget your consumption)
Lovely Azcaraga has two children and owns a lot of appliances at home. Her bill rose to P6,000 when she was still using postpaid. After she shifted to prepaid, her monthly bill dropped to P3,000 monthly.
“Mas naging conscious na po. Hindi katulad dati, sabay-sabay nakabukas electric fan, aircon.”
(We are more conscious now unlike before we used to turn on all appliances at the same time.)
Meralco’s “Kuryente Load” can be availed in p100, p200, p300, p500 and p1,000 denominations.
All prepaid customers receive a daily text message reminding them of their remaining load.
Almost all of these houses in this particular subdivision use prepaid electricity. Meralco plans to expand its prepaid electricity service soon. But so far, the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has only allowed up to 40,000 houses. Meralco’s petition to expand up to 100 housing units is still pending.
For now, installation of smart meters remains free of charge from Meralco. (UNTV News)
