PASIG CITY, Philippines — After a sorry loss to MMDA last December 4, Malacañang bounced back with an 86-85 overtime win against BFP in the second round eliminations of UNTV Cup Season 4 at Ynares Sports Arena.

UNTV Cup, the Public Service Channel’s basketball league where cash prizes are donated to charities, is led by multi-awarded broadcaster and Mr. Public Service Daniel Razon.

Department of Tourism staff Samuel Ignacio and PSG officer Paul Anthony Yamamoto sunk crucial free throws in regulation to send the game into overtime, 73 all.

Ignacio and Jenkins Mesina combined forces in the extra five minutes as Malacañang survived the gallant fight of BFP which was anchored on fire volunteers Marlon Adolfo, Julius Edmon Jayona and Richmond Sibal.

Patriots finally tasted a lead in the final quarter courtesy of Ignacio’s basket, Malacañang 69 BFP 67, 3:20 left.

Yamamoto converted on a free throw to give Patriots a one point lead, 70-69 with a minute and 56 seconds remaining.

Fire volunteer Jonathan Egea strong drive to the basket put BFP on the upper hand again, 71-70 in the 1:45 mark.

Edward Juinio scored a free throw to tie the game at 71 with 96 seconds left.
Egea once again drove strongly to the basket as Firefighters took the lead, 73-71 with 34.2 ticks left.

But the former Barangay Hoopsters pointguard committed an unsportsmanlike foul that gave Malacañang a chance to tie the game as Ignacio drilled in one,73 all with 15.8 ticks left.
Adolfo had a chance to win it for BFP but he missed his two free throws as the game went into overtime.

With Sibal, Egea and Kurt Amores fouling out one after another, Malacañang pounced on undermanned Firefighters in the extra five minutes to register their fifth win in eight outings while handling BFP its second straight loss to fall down to 5-3 mark.

The Bong Ramos-mentored team and the runner up of UNTV Cup Season 3 will face the squad that humiliated them in last season’s championship, the defending and two time champion Judiciary Magis this Sunday, December 13, 4:30 pm at Ynares Sports Arena. (MARK SUBA)
