QUEZON CITY, Philippines — There is abundant water supply in Angat Dam.
This is after the water level surpassed the normal high water level of 212 meters. As of 6:00 a.m. on Monday, the dam has 215.15 meters of water level and continues to increase. Typhoons Lando and Nona contributed a lot in increasing the dam’s water level.
National Water Resources Board (NWRB) says the currect level of the dam can sustain the required allocation for Metro Manila as well as for irrigations in Pampanga and Bulacan even if there is an existing El Niño phenomenon. NWRB has allocated 42 cubic meters per second for Metro Manila and 32 cubic meters per second for the irrigation.
Maynilad supplies for almost 2 million households while Manila Water serves almost a million customers.
Angat Dam has a maximum water level of 217 meters, but the board won’t allow the water to reach that level in order to accommodate possible rainfall.
“Kailangan din po natin na may sapat tayong buffer para kung sakaling magkaroon ng mga pag-ulan na malakas, ay mayroon sapat tayong lugar para ma-accomodate yung mga pag-ulan natin,” explained NWRB Executive Director. Dr. Sevillo D. David, Jr.
(There must be a sufficient buffer. In case there is heavy rainfall, we’ll have space to accommodate it.)
The NWRB continues to advise the public to conserve water. (MARJE NAVARRO / UNTV News)
