QUEZON CITY, Philippines — The youth-led Kalayaan Atin Ito movement promised to show the public, pictures and videos of China’s militarized zone at the West Philippine Sea which they took during their two-week patriotic voyage to Pag-asa Island.
According to members of the movement, China’s establishment of militarized zones on Fiery Cross Reef, Subi Reef and Mischief Reef, shows their dominance over the Kalayaan Island group.
One proof is AFP’s difficulty in passing through these areas and the restriction on Filipino fishermen who can no longer fish in these areas.
While in Pag-asa Island, they witnessed the daily patrol of a Chinese coast guard ship with bow number 46708, violating the country’s 12-nautical-mile territorial sea.
Aside from this, a Chinese coastguard helicopter was also seen patrolling around the Pag-asa Island which the Kalayaan Atin Ito movement was able to film.
However, the real reason to worry about not only by the Philippines but by rest of the world, is the secured storage for weapons of mass destruction in China’s militarized zones at the West Philippine Sea.
The 47 young volunteers arrived in Palawan main island on Sunday, fresh from their freedom voyage to Pag-asa Island led by former marine officer, Nicanor Faeldon.
Dr. Jay L. Batongbacal of the UP Institute for Maritime Affairs & Law of the Sea said, the Kalayaan Atin Ito movement’s freedom voyage will not affect the case filed by the Philippines against China on the West Philippine Sea territorial dispute.
However, Dr. Batongbacal said it will increase tension because China will react against it as well as other countries involved in the West Philippine Sea territorial dispute.(DARLENE BASINGAN / UNTV News)
