CANADA — The Ontario Court of Justice has sentenced Filipina Imelda Saluma of up to six years imprisonment due to multiple charges of immigration fraud.

Saluma is one of the consultants of the recruitment agency “Go West Jobs International” based in Toronto.

She recruited Filipinos who wish to apply for a job and become a permanent resident of Canada.

According to Toronto Police, some of Saluma’s victims had been stranded in their destination countries without money and proper legal documents, while some had been blacklisted for two years by the Canadian immigration.

Toronto Police Fraud Unit Const. Jennifer Rae said, “We are working with the federal government to see if those names can be lifted from that ban. We are trying to help the victims in many ways not just to get their money back so that they can actually get to Canada at some point in the future, to become employees if that’s what they still wish to do.”

One of Saluma’s agents, Susan, not her real name, has spoken to UNTV News.

Susan confessed to being an agent of Saluma without knowing that the company was a scam.

“Magkano lang ang sahod ko, I was contended. I’m OK that’s why I don’t ask for more sa mga nai-refer ko sa kaniya dahil ang intention ko is makarating talaga sila dito. I paid a lot of money when I came here. I paid almost seven thousand and she asked only a couple of thousands sa mga applicants which was OK. That’s why I thought it’s OK but yan nga ang nangyari.”

(My salary is just minimum. I was contented. I’m OK that’s why I don’t ask for more from my referrals because my intention is to help them get here. I paid a lot of money when I came here. I paid almost P7,000 and she asked only a couple of thousands from the applicants which was OK. That’s why I thought, it’s OK, until this happened.)

Susan said she regretted dealing with Saluma’s schemes. Because of the incident, she is now receiving a lot threats to her life.

“Ang iba, they want to get my family involved talaga sa nangyari. Masama, masasakit na salita and some threats. It’s so stressful for me, every month I get sick.”

Susan said she is willing to cooperate with the investigation and also help other Filipinos who fell victim to the scam.

“Whatever I can do to help them, I’m here to help if they need the names. Actually, they are even willing kahit yung mga skilled na nandoon sa list.”
