Philippine National Police (PNP) checked its skidding form just in time to pull off a 72-69 win over Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and arrange a title series with top seed Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in the 4th UNTV Cup held over the weekend at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

Police Officer II Ronaldo Abaya led the PNP Responders with 16 points but it was former University of the East player Ollan Omiping who delivered the telling blows in their sudden death match for the second finals berth.

The 6-foot Omiping, who is now a Police Officer III, scored six of his 11 points in the payoff period as the Responders completed their impressive showing against the twice-to-beat Blackwolves.

With Abaya scoring 10 points and Antonio Tolentino adding six markers, the Responders appeared headed for a breezy win as they took a 46-30 halftime lead.

But the Blackwolves suddenly caught fire with Jeff Sanders and Johnedel Cardel at the helm to grab the lead, 59-57, that set the tone for a thrilling finish.

The Responders and the AFP Cavaliers begin their best-of-three title series on Sunday with the second game scheduled on March 7 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The champion team gets P4 million with the P3.5 million going to its chosen charity while the remaining P500,000 will be shared by each member of the team.

The runner-up team will receive P2 million – P1.7 million for its chosen charity and the remaining P300,000 going to the members of the team. The third and fourth placers will pocket P200,000 and P100,000, respectively., aside from providing financial help to their respective charities.
