The PDP-Laban is certain that they will get the speakership post in the 17th Congress.
Accordingly to Davao del Norte 1st district Congressman-elect Pantaleon Alvarez, PDP-Laban’s candidate for speakership, many congressmen have expressed willingness to transfer to PDP-Laban.
Among them are Liberal Party officials and members.
“Yes, there are. They signify their willingness to transfer to PNP-Laban,” Alvarez confirmed.
The Party List Coalition in Congress also conveyed support to presumptive president Duterte.
Ako Bikol Party List Rep. Rodel Batocabe assures full support on all legislative measures that the Duterte administration will be implementing.
“The Party List Coalition of the House of Representatives pledged to give its full support to president-elect Rodrigo Duterte as the government transitions to his presidency,” Batocabe said.
Alvarez added that the priority of the PDP-Laban is to push for the federal form of government.
He reiterated that the unilateral system causes poverty in the country.
In a unilateral system, provincial government is required to give its income to the national treasury and the national treasury will decide how much will be given to each and every province.
But in a federal form of government every person in the province will benefit from their region’s income.
Alvarez also said that under the federal government, there will no longer be any need for a basic law for the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region.
Alvarez is a former member of the 10th Congress from 1998 to 2001 under the Arroyo administration.
He then transferred to the DOTC after his term as congressman ended.
Based on the rules of the lower house, at the opening of the 17th Congress, members shall elect a new Speaker of the House. The one with the second highest number of votes shall be the majority leader.
