MANILA CITY, Philippines — The Manila Police District (MPD), together with several personnel of the Department of Social Welfare and Development, combed the streets of Manila at past 10:00 p.m. last night to rescue the homeless and rugby boys off the street.
Minors who were loitering past the 10 p.m. curfew were rounded up, including a two-year old girl who was found sleeping on the pavement with her mother.
Even the youngsters who flock to internet cafes and gaming areas on the sidewalks of Orequita Street, were taken by authorities.
These nocturnal recreations are among the top reasons why children stay out late.
According to MPD, they have intensified their efforts to foster discipline among residents and promote awareness of the ordinances being implemented in the city.
In total, the police have arrested 34 violators, including individuals caught drinking and gambling in public; shirtless men and street dwellers.
To the delight of DSWD, the series of operations in the city has reduced the number of offenders in succeeding rescues.
Repeat adult offenders will be temporarily detained and imposed with community service penalty, while minors will be momentarily placed under the custody of DSWD.
