Ex-Senate Pres. Ernie Maceda dies of multiple organ failure

QUEZON CITY, Philippines — Former senate president, Ernesto Maceda passed away last night at the age of 81. His remains will lie in state at Mount Carmel Church in New Manila at 3 p.m. this afternoon.

According to his family, Maceda died of multiple organ failure at 8:58 p.m., shortly after being put on life support system due to complications following a gall bladder removal surgery at St. Luke’s Medical Center

It can be recalled that Maceda served as senate president from 1996 to 1998 and as ambassador to the United States from 1991 to 2001.

He was fondly known as “Manong Ernie” and “Mr. Expose” in the Senate.

The political stalwart also produced a record number of 177 bills and maintained a perfect attendance in the Senate.

The Maceda family has expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of sympathy and prayers from friends and relatives.

Meanwhile, the former legislator will be interred on Saturday at Loyola Memorial park in Marikina City.
