MANILA, Philippines — For the first time since they joined the UNTV Cup, the NHA Builders defeated the two-time champion Judiciary Magis last Sunday with the final score 95-87.
This is why the Builders are so happy.
Coach Bennet Palad said, “Actually, sabi ko hindi tayo mananalo kung kanya-kanya. Kasi kung kanya-kanya tayo, ma-open tayo, mag e-errors. Ngayon sabi ko magtulungan lalo na yung Tolomia , yung Camaso. So kung hindi mo tao yun at libre kailangan mo puntahan yun. So it’s more team effort kami ngayon at yung puso nila ngayon hindi sila bumigay.”
(Actually, I told them that we cannot win if we don’t work together. We will be open to errors if the players don’t play as a team. I told them, we must help in guarding them, especially, Chester Tolomia and Don Camaso. Even if they are not assigned to you, you should also help in containing them. Now, it’s more of team effort and their hearts didn’t falter.)
Meanwhile Coach Joey Yabut of Judiciary Magis expressed, “Unang una naging problema namin yung depensa, yung tao-tao kasi nakakalusot sila. Saka yung transition offense nila, doon kami medyo nahirapan sa kanila, yung takbuhan.”
(Firstly, we had problems with our defense. Our man-to-man defense was not that effective. Their transition offense really punished us.)
In the beginning of the battle, the Magis dropped three consecutive three-pointers from Warrane Ybanez, Don Camaso and Chester Tolomia for them to be ahead in the first quarter 23-20.
But the NHA Builders did not back down, they quickly took the lead early in the second quarter, 28-25. And they managed to maintain the momentum to their favor until the end of the 2nd period, 46-38.
NHA’s lead reached 14 points but Judiciary was able to narrow down the gap to 6 points.
In the last period, the Magis had a 7-0 run to take the lead of the game, 69-68.
They even held the lead until 74-71, after a three-point shot from Chester Tolomia.
But NHA was quick to recover. Former MVP Antonio Lustestica Jr. responded with three consecutive field goals from the rainbow country.
Then on, the Builders controlled the momentum for the rest of the game.
Lustestica (25pts) and John Derrick Dizon (18pts) were both hailed as the best player of the game.
While Chester Tolomia (25pts), W. Ybanez (17pts), C. Camaso (16pts) led the Judiciary Magis.
Earlier in the tripleheader, Malacanan-PSC Kamao listed their 2nd win of the season by defeating the DOJ Justice Boosters, 91-75.
In the other game, Senate Defenders claimed their first win after giving the BFP Firefighters their 2nd loss in the final score, 88-81. — Bernard Dadis / UNTV New & Rescue
