Supporters of Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno flocked on Tuesday in front of the Supreme Court (SC) to call for the dismissal of the quo warranto petition.

MANILA, Philippines — Coinciding with the deliberation of the Supreme Court en banc, supporters of Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno flocked on Tuesday in front of the Supreme Court (SC) to call for the dismissal of the quo warranto petition against the country’s highest official in the judiciary.

Based on crowd estimate by the Manila Police District Station 5, around 130 persons gathered outside the SC to call for the junking of the said petition.

The quo warranto seeks for the nullification of CJ Sereno’s appointment as the highest court official.

It can be recalled that Solicitor General Jose Calida said the filing of the petition is an act of kindness to avoid the bitter process in the impeachment court.

But supporters of Sereno stood firm that SC justices might be biased in deciding the fate of the chief justice.

“Nagdedeliberate sila at alam naming ito’y isang importanteng desisyon na gagawin ngayon at para malaman nila na hindi mag-isa si CJ dito sa laban na ito,” said Coalition for Justice covenor, Caloy Diño.

(They are deliberating and we know that this is an important decision they have to make. But they should know that CJ is not alone in this battle.)

They also have an appeal to the members of the judiciary.

“Huwag nilang ihalo ‘yung kanilang mga personal na nararamdaman , mga personal nilang interes. Huwag nilang ihalo sa pagdedesisyon dito,” said Diño.

(They should not mix their own personal sentiments and interests. They should not let it influence their decision. )

After the Supreme Court en banc’s session, the SC gave the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG) five days to submit a reply to the comment of Sereno’s camp.

In their reply, CJ’s legal team insisted that the official may only be removed from office through impeachment.
