The driver of this Easy taxi unit was involved in overcharging a foreign tourist using a fake tariff.

MANILA, Philippines — Personnel of the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) have arrested the taxi driver who went viral on social media for contracting his Chinese passenger using a fake taxi meter.

MIAA intelligence and investigation division said that it has discovered the modus operandi of the suspect through the video posted by food vlogger Mikey Chen.

The driver allegedly charged Chen P2,300 taxi fare from Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 4 to Terminal 3 last January 27.

Chen said he was able to bargain the price down to P1,500.

The suspect did not deny the allegations.

“Eh sinubukan ko lang. Isang beses lang ‘yon Sir,” said the suspect.

(I just tried it once.)

“Pinagbigyan na kayo ng MIAA para kumuha ng mga pasahero doon kasi kulang yung yellow metered. Huwag ninyong abusuhin,” said Land Transportation and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) board member Atty. Aileen Lizada.

(MIAA gave you a chance to pick up passengers at the airport because there is a lack of yellow metered taxis. Don’t abuse it.)

The operator of the taxi was fined P100, 200 while the vehicle will be impounded for three months.

The license of the driver might be canceled or be included in the blacklist of the Land Transportation Office (LTO).

Meanwhile, a taxi driver was also apprehended for using a tampered taximeter.

Personnel of MIAA discovered the fraud when they inspected the yellow taxi.

The control was hidden under the driver’s seat.

It is a device used to speed up the taximeter.

“This is already fraud. You are employing another device para mas bumilis. You are tampering already with the meter na. ‘Yan ho ay calibrated and sealed para hindi ninyo galawin,” said Lizada.

The yellow metered taxi will be impounded for three months and its operator will have to pay a fine of P120,000. — Joan Nano| UNTV News & Rescue
