The controversial anti-dengue vaccine, Dengvaxia

MANILA, Philippines —The University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH) Dengue Investigative Task Force (DITF) is looking to release this week the result of their investigation on the deaths of 17 suspected Dengvaxia victims.

The Department of Health (DOH) has assured that each Dengvaxia case underwent the proper process of histopathological study or the examination of a person’s tissues to find out the illness that caused their deaths.

The health department still has other Dengvaxia-related death cases, however, they still need to verify this information before undergoing another histopathological study by the UP-PGH expert panel.

Health undersecretary Eric Domingo said they are continuously coordinating with the Public Attorney’s Office (PAO) to consolidate the reports they have even though they initially said they will not cooperate due to conflict of interest.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on immunization (WHO-SAGE) will soon release its report and recommendation on Dengvaxia.

It states the efficacy of the vaccine and who should be injected with it.

“They have already changed by virtue of the question and answer document in which the SAGE group, confirmed that they would recommend using the vaccine only if there has been evidence for previous infection or exposure to dengue for a vaccine. This is already the new recommendation,” WHO representative Dr. Gundo Aurel Weiler said.— Aiko Miguel | UNTV News & Rescue
