LAGUNA, Philippines — Four suspected members of a kidnap-for-ransom group were dead on the spot after an encounter with authorities on Maharlika Highway in Barangay San Nicolas San Pablo Laguna at 6 a.m. Tuesday.
Three policemen from Candelaria Police Station were injured while one policewoman, identified as P01 Ma. Zarah Jane Andal, was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
A by-stander was also rushed to the hospital after being hit by a stray bullet during the encounter.
According to initial investigation, the suspects were about to conduct a pay-off for their kidnap victim, Ronaldo Arquelles, who was abducted from his residence on Monday night.
The suspects however, sensed the approaching police vehicle and started to open fire; prompting the operatives to fire back.
The kidnap victim is in critical condition. He was found to be included on the drug watch list and is considered a high-value target.
