MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang cannot tell yet whether or not President Rodrigo Duterte will fly to Kuwait following the incident between Kuwaiti and Philippine embassy officials during the weekend.
“I’m not aware of the final decision of the president whether or not he will go to Kuwait, so I will clarify. But the last statement was, he wants to go to tell them why they should be more humane to Filipino workers,” said Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque.
Last Saturday, April 21, the Kuwaiti government questioned Ambassador Renato Pedro Villa for his controversial remarks against the Gulf state. Some embassy officials were also arrested and accused of convincing Filipino workers to escape from their respective employers.
The Palace is still hopeful that the misunderstanding will not affect the signing of a bilateral agreement on OFW protection between the two countries.
“I’m not aware now of the current stand of the Philippine president and we will, of course, await word from the DFA (Department of Foreign Affairs) on the latest event that happened this weekend in Kuwait,” Roque said. — Rosalie Coz | UNTV News & Rescue
