QUEZON CITY, Philippines – Extreme political rivalry, high presence of private armed groups, rampant activities of criminal gangs and increased presence of terror groups such as the New People’s Army.
These are among the reasons why the Philippine National Police (PNP) has recommended the province of Masbate to be placed under the control of the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
PNP Public Information Office Chief PCSupt. John Bulalacao said such recommendation will give the Comelec “immediate and direct control and supervision” over the province in accordance with Comelec Resolution No. 10199 wherein “election bans and prohibitions” are strictly enforced.
Bulalacao said they have intensified their security operations in the province to ensure peace and order ahead of the May polls.
“We have already increased the number of personnel deployed for checkpoints,” the official said.
Since April 14, the PNP was able to arrest over 500 individuals for different violations; 403 for illegal possession of firearms; and 2,712 for possession of bladed weapon. — Lea Ylagan | UNTV News & Rescue
