MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is already anticipating that a number of teachers or board election tellers will not show up in the May 14 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan polls.
Though the law does not oblige teachers to serve during elections under the Election Service Reform Act, there are still around 600,000 teachers across the country who committed to reporting on May 14 to do election duties.
In case a board of election teller (BET) fails to appear on the day of the election, the poll body has assigned 10 teachers on standby in each polling place to serve as substitutes.
Comelec has already received a number of notices from teachers in Pikit, North Cotabato who backed out from their commitment on election day.
Due to the increased political tension in the province, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has assigned police personnel to serve as BETs in different areas.
Comelec Spokesperson James Jimenez explained that in the absence of BETs, police personnel should serve as substitute in order for the election to proceed.
As regards the cash cards and honoraria for teachers, the poll body has assigned Finance staff stationed at Comelec command center’s assistance desk for BETs to claim. — Aiko Miguel | UNTV News & Rescue
