An alleged high-ranking NPA leader facing multiple criminal cases was turned over Tuesday, May 29 to the Davao City Police after he was arrested in Bukidnon.
Elizalde Tormis Cañete alias Ka Jinggoy,36,was arrested on May 12 while being treated in a hospital in Don Carlos, Bukidnon for gunshot wounds he sustained during his group’s encounter with the 103rd Brigade on May 10 in Kitao-tao, Bukdnon.
Davao City Police Office Chief S/Supt. Alexander Tagum said,”Nirefer po nila sa amin ito para kami na po yung mag serve ng warrant of arrest sa kanya at magsauli na din ng warrant of arrest sa mga korte na may hawak kung saan involved si Kumander Jinggoy.”
(He was referred to us so we can serve the warrant of arrest on him as well as return the arrest warrants to courts that handle cases involving Kumander Jinggoy.)
The Regional Trial Court (RTC) 11th Judicial Region slapped Cañete with 12 criminal cases, five of which are non-bailable.
He has standing arrest warrants for serious illegal detention (no bail); four counts of murder (no bail); four counts of attempted murder (no bail); frustrated murder; and alias warrant.
Cañete assumed leadership of Pulang Bagani Command, Southern Mindanao Regional Committee, after its previous leader, Leoncio Pitao alias Ka Parago, was killed in a police raid.
His group is believed to be behind the burning of a banana packing plant at Barangay Mandug in Davao last year. He is also responsible for the death of a fish vendor who died after getting by a landmine planted by the group.
Police will enforce stricter security measures while Cañete is under their custody. Except for his lawyer, other relatives will not be allowed to see him.
“Considering that Kumader Jinggoy is a high valued prisoner or detainee, for purposes of security, we will not allow ang visit ng iyang mga paryente (visitation from his relatives),” said Tagum.
He added that they are prepared for any protests calling for the release of Ka Jinggoy. He reminded protesters not to obstruct traffic to avoid getting arrested.
