QUEZON CITY, Philippines – The Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) filed Thursday, May 31, a bill that seeks an additional P320 to the daily minimum wage.

The labor group filed House Bill Number 7805 that would increase the current minimum wage of P512  to P832  a day for workers in the private sector in the National Capital Region.

Based on the minimum wage matrix, an increase in NCR would entitle other regions to wage increase as well. This would mean an increase from P610 to P720  daily minimum wage in Luzon; from P605 to P686 in Visayas; and from P585 to P660 in Mindanao.

TUCP Assistant General Secretary and Spokesperson Vicente Camilon Junior said such minimum wage hike is reasonable for families to catch up with increasing prices of commodities.

“Lahat ay apekdato sa TRAIN, sa peso depreciation, sa oil price increase, lahat apektado,” he said.

(Everyone is affected by TRAIN, peso depreciation, oil price increase.)

Meanwhile, Malacañang said it doesn’t oppose any call for a minimum wage increase and will respect whatever the decision of Congress on the matter.

“Tama po ang ginawa ng TUCP.  Naghain sila ng panukalang batas dahil iyong batas na umiiral po ngayon ay regional wage increases. Pero kung maipapasa po iyan ay gagalangin naman po ng Palasyo,” said Presidential Spokesperson Secretary Harry Roque.

(TUCP did the right thing. They filed a proposal because the prevailing law is regional wage increases.  If it gets approved the Palace will respect its passage.  — Grace Casin | UNTV News & Rescue
