TACLOBAN City, Philippines – Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Director General Ronald Dela Rosa revealed Friday, June 8, that drug lords inside the New Bilibid Prison are now tapping the service of medical practitioners such as doctors and nurses in the illegal drugs trade.
General Bato cited the case of drug lord Amin Buratong who, despite being confined at the National Penitentiary’s medical facility for over a year, was still able to manage illegal drug transactions.
Buratong was the owner of the raided shabu tiangge in Pasig City.
Dela Rosa also noted a case where an attending physician intentionally declared a drug personality as mentally ill to cover up the scheme.
“Imagine pati iyong mga nurses, mga doktor nagagamit ng mga drug lord. Mayroong ida-diagnose na bu-ang, bu-ang kuno. Iyon pala ipapa-diagnose na bu-ang para tuloy iyong kaniyang negosyo sa droga,” the BuCor chief narrated.
(Can you imagine, even nurses and doctors are being used by drug lords. They will falsely diagnose someone with mental illness so that the illegal drug trade can continue.)
General Bato believes that medical workers in the facility were being threatened or bribed to give in to their modus operandi.
Meanwhile, Dela Rosa again warned inmates in his visit to Leyte Regional Prison to do away with illegal drugs trade, adding that the President is serious in his war against illegal drugs.
“Alam ninyo kung ano ang pinaka ayaw ko, pinakaayaw ni Presidente yung droga. Iyong sige negosyo pa diyan, baka mamatay kayo. When I say mamatay, pwedeng namatay sa sakit…Kaya ihinto na ninyo yan,” Dela Rosa concluded.
(You know what I and the President hate the most — it’s drugs. If you continue dealing, you could die. When I say “die”, I mean you could die from a disease. That’s why you should stop it.) – Archyl Egano / Marje Pelayo
