MANILA, Philippines – The Tax Reform Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) law also hit the prices of canned goods in markets, according to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI.)

Based on the latest suggested retail price (SRP) issued by the Department on June 8, the prices of canned products such as corned beef, meat loaf and sardines marked an increase of 55 centavos to 90 centavos.

DTI explained that most of the raw materials in manufacturing canned goods, such as the tin cans and labels, are imported. This prompted the price increase in canned items aside from the effects of rising inflation as a result of the implementation of TRAIN law.

Nevertheless, following the agency’s rounds in major markets in San Juan City Monday, June 11, the inspecting team led by DTI Undersecretary Ruth Castelo is pleased to know that the SRPs on basic commodities are being imposed accordingly.

Aside from canned goods, vegetable and meat products also marked price increases.

Ginger – P70/kg (from P60)
Papaya – P25/kg (from P20)
Taro (Gabi) – P80/kg (from P70)
Tomato – P28-P38/kg (from P20)
Carrots – P60/kg (from P45)
Bell Pepper – P140/kg (from P90)
Pechay Baguio – P60/kg (from P45)

Pork meat – P190/kg (from P185)
Pork Liempo – P200/kg (from P190)
Dressed chicken – P140/kg (from P135)
Beef – P320/kg (from P300)

DTI encourages consumers to immediately report any case of unauthorized price increase or violation of the SRPs in basic items to the agency’s hotline number 0917-8343330. Grace Casin / Marje Pelayo
